Our history
Four generations of the Williams family have worked Coffs Coast timber. The name on the gate has changed once. The family has not.
The family enters the Coffs Coast timber trade as the district becomes a major timber port, with tramways running logs down to the jetties.
The jetty had opened in 1892 and Coffs Harbour was a timber town first. Logs came down the ranges by tramway and left by ship for Sydney. The township grew up around the Jetty, where this business began.
Back from service in the Second World War, Leonard takes the business on from his father Malcolm and runs it as a sole trader.
The RAAF ran a base at the Coffs Harbour airfield through the war years, and when the men came home bananas were taking over the hillsides. Timber and bananas carried the town for the next generation.
Incorporated in 1966. From the Coffs Harbour Jetty yard the company becomes a major supplier of power poles, girders and bridge timbers through the 1960s and 70s.
The Big Banana opened on the Pacific Highway in 1964 as Australia's first big thing, and Coffs Harbour started selling itself to holidaymakers. The same decade the town electrified and sealed its roads, on Williams poles and bridges.
The business leaves the Jetty for room to grow. A sawmill is built in the late 1980s, opening up a far wider range of sawn products.
Coffs Harbour was proclaimed a city in 1987, the sign that the timber town had grown into the regional centre of the Mid North Coast. The Jetty was turning from a working port into a place to eat and walk.
Shane and Chris Williams carry the business from Leonard to the third generation. Andrew Williams now runs it, with his sister Anne-Marie in the Coffs Harbour office and Shane still on hand.
Coffs Harbour is home to close to 78,000 people and the Pacific Highway bypass, the biggest road job in the region's history, is being built around it. Hardwood bridges, poles and piles are still going in, and still coming from Wears Road.
A hard-working team of locals who take pride in their work, and suppliers and customers treated with respect. That is the whole secret to 126 years.
Logging is the first step of everything we do, so it is done to strict Forestry and EPA guidelines. Sustainable forest management is how the next generation gets a business at all.
